Appendix: Carbon-14 Dating

Radiocarbon testing measures the carbon-14 (C-14) in a sample of organic material. Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope and decays with time. The older the sample is, the less carbon-14 it contains, and thus it is possible to come to a conclusion about the material’s age. The method has been in use since the mid-twentieth century and has revolutionized archaeology. The textiles in this appendix were dated at the Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit in the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford.
